Perez Reviews: Fat Camp

Saturday afternoon we caught the matinee of Fat Camp, a new musical currently playing off Broadway, and it was good fun!
Aimed at younger audiences and featuring a young cast, the show needs some maturing, though.
It takes years and years to develop a musical, especially ones that end up on Broadway. And what Fat Camp needs most is... Marc Shaiman!
The weakest link in the show is that the songs are average but none of them are spectacular. The book is endearing and a winner. But the music needs a lot of help! If Shaiman, or someone of his caliber, were interested in coming in and helping Matthew Roi Berger, who did the music, the songs would be a lot better. And, in a Broadway musical, if the songs aren't of a certain caliber, it just won't fly!
Thankfully, though, the cast in this production is stellar, most notably Carly Jibson, who brings such an infectious comedic energy to every scene she's in! And her voice is phe-no-me-nal! She may not be the lead in the show, but she certainly steals Fat Camp! We see a bright future for her in sitcoms!
It was so fun watching the cast have so much fun on stage!
With some more work, Fat Camp could be a real Broadway contender!
And, if you love Glee, then check out the show now. You will find it very enjoyable!
