Perez Reviews: Once!
Wow. Wow. Wow!
We were blown away by the Broadway adaptation of Once on Saturday!
The musical was exhilarating! It was earnest and poignant but also vibrant and fun!
The helpless romantic in us couldn't help but be riveted by the captivating love story, told so beautifully and honestly. And the lead performances, by Steve Kazee and Cristin Milioti were inspired! So soulful! Rooted in a sense of realness.
The music, which we had never heard before but are totally buying the soundtrack to, was so moving! It's like One Republic meets Damien Rice. It's rooted in the folk earnestness of Rice but also has the commercial appeal of One Republic.
The ensemble was great as well! No complaints, except for we wish Milioti's character had an additional song or two. The show was driven by Kazee's character, and thankfully he handled it with such finesse. And Cristin's portrayal was so multidimensional and emotionally rich!
We can't recommend Once enough! It's right up there with Newsies for our favorite new show we've seen this season!
